Rejected mail ballots increased in Washington and Oregon following the United States Postal Service changed its postmarking rules.

The new rule led to more ballots being rejected because of late postmarks.

Lawmakers reported that, in several Washington counties, the number of rejected ballots more than doubled following the change.

The increase occurred because of the Postal Service's adjustment to the way it postmarks mail, affecting voters who mailed ballots by the deadline.
